Hot Wheels have become the world's most popular die-cast toy car.  Many cars cost just $1-5, but you may be holding on to a gem worth hundreds, so it's well worth finding out if your Hot Wheels are really hot!  Billed as the "fastest metal cars in the world," Mattel's Hot Wheels first entered the die-cast toy market in 1968, quickly becoming more popular than the Matchbox cars by Lesney and Toys by other toy car makers.  At 1:64 the scale of a true automobile and less than 3 inches long, Hot Wheels boasted a special torsion-bar suspension and low-friction wheel bearings.  Often based on real models, they were and still are very desirable.

Collecting How Wheels can be a fun and inexpensive hobby, with thousands of models to choose from, most selling for between $10 and $40.  A 1978 Packin' Pacer can be scooped up for $8-15, and cars from The Heroes series of 1979 - such as The Hulk or Captain America - for around $30 each.

The most collectible models cost $50 and up, and usually boast hard-to-find variations in paintwork or on the windows, interiors, or base.  The variety of wheel - there are over 25 - is another factor in determining the value of a Hot Wheels car.  For example, the Peterbilt Dump Truck No. 100 normally costs $3-5 but an example with white basic wheels can sell for over $30-40.  Consult a reference guide to get acquainted with the many subtle variations and find out what's rare and desirable.
